I was getting the same Suspension Fault, Normal Height Only message as mhewitt on a regular basis. Never went down to the bump stops or failed. I let it get to the point where it came on every trip after about a couple of minutes before I was able to schedule a replacement. When I got back in the car after an hour to drive back home, the suspension system started acting up. The first warning said to remove the vehicle from the obstacle and return to normal height. I did this and started driving home. A few miles in, the red "Suspension Fault - Do not exceed 30 MPH" light came on and the car completely lowered. This cure only applies to vin numbers 6A198057 Onwards (around the 2006 facelift time) Range rover have recognised a problem with "suspension fault" coming up on the dash. My problem was with the small metal muffler on the compressor getting blocked and not letting the air in or out quick enough.

Exact message is "Suspension Fault - Normal Height Only" and the red suspension warning indicator illuminates (not FLASHING). It didn't seem to be affecting the ride in any way and was reset when restarting. However, that morphed into the warning coming on more frequently but cancelling itself. Again, the ride didn't seem to be affected. Anyway moving on to the latest problem. For the last while I have the suspension fault “normal ride height only” The compressor will work fine for the first 2 mins after start up then d amber light comes on on the dash and fault appears. Dealer said compressor needs replacing. Air suspension is currently in fault mode. It will have to be re-set by someone who has the Land Rover scantool (either a dealer or an independent shop). The EAS system is inaccessible with a regular OBDII scantool. The car will not allow you to control the suspension height (raise/lower/defeat) until the fault is cleared. Please see this link.

The compressors have 2 temp sensors, 1 in the head and the other in the motor. The ecu will show a 'waiting to cool' message if overheating anywhere, not a 'normal height only' message.
